That character with the conscience had another twinge yesterday. The result was four more $20 bills added to the pile he started sending to the City Treasurer's office last February. Similar amounts were sent in February, March, April and May for a total of $400.
As with the others, a single sheet of paper was enclosed in the envelope. On it was written: "Please put this money in the conscience fund. Thank you."
Carping critics point out that in the envelopes addressed to City Treasurer George DiLauro the word treasurer is always misspelled "treasurer".
At $80 a month so who's spelling?
WASHINGTON, June 22 (AP) The Government last night made public an estimate that 1,500,000 Americans who were cigarette smokers have quit smoking entirely within the last 18 months.
It is estimated that about 38 million others are regular smokers- 25 million men and 13 million women.
The estimates were based on a sample of about 40,000 persons surveyed by the
Census Bureau for the National Cancer Institute of the Public Health Service.
"The data will be of value to National Cancer Institute statisticians and physicians who are studying the incidence of cancer in the population- particularly lung cancer- in relationship to smoking habits," the Health Service's announcement said.
The 1,500,000 persons believed to have stopped cigarette smoking in the past 18 months compares with 600,000 estimated to have quit in the previous year, from the fall of 1952 to the fall of 1953.
Officials said they did not have figures for the years before the fall of 1952. Thus there was no way of telling just how many of those who stopped smoking were influenced by the public discussion, under way for several years, as to a possible relation between cigarettes and lung cancer. Officials said some of those who quit may start smoking them again later.
The Health Service said the survey figures were preliminary results based on interviews conducted early this year by census takers with both men and women over 17 years of age. The study covered 230 urban areas consisting of about 450 counties scattered throughout all regions of the nation.

'We shall dwell in peaceful and quiet resting places where no man can make us ashamed!'
You do not feel that you would be or will be so much ashamed in this, the Mount of the House of the LORD and other such places as this and these are, when we have finished our work of renovation, of remodeling and of advancing the improvements of them. For truly as it has been, it has been conservatively estimated that the property here is worth at least a hundred per cent MORE than it was when it was taken over by our Church, from a monetary point of view. But from a SPIRITUAL point of view, as it is in the fulfillment of the prophecy, you cannot actually value the SPIRITUAL value of it! Aren't you glad! ("Yes, so glad!" came the reply.)
But no doubt, according to the statistics and according to the record as given by representative surveyors and others, the property, the value has INCREASED at least a HUNDRED PER CENT! But I have not finished the unfoldment of the Blessing, for your presence and the Consciousness of GOD'S Presence with you will produce the BEST and DESIRABLE RESULTS in connection with this great unfoldment! For this cause we do rejoice and we are glad to say,
'You shall dwell in peaceful and quiet resting places where no man can make you ashamed; where sickness, sorrow, pain and death will not come!'
For John declared in his prediction on another occasion, he looked and he saw
'a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH coming down from GOD out of Heaven, prepared as a Bride adorned for her husband!'
It is marvelous to behold the things that are coming down from out of the imaginary Heaven and from the imaginary GOD to the earth plane!
'For the Tabernacle of GOD is with men and HE shall dwell with them! And GOD HIMSELF shall be with them and shall be their GOD and they shall be HIS People!'

In this revelationic prediction we see we are Personally in the fulfilling, where GOD HIMSELF is WITH men! I did not say in that prediction that the SON would be with them, but this is the unfoldment and the manifestation of the END, where GOD HIMSELF shall be with them, and GOD shall wipe all tears from their eyes! There shall be no more death after a while! Just keep the Faith and recognize the Actual Presence of GOD and GOD will be to you a Rock in the weary land and a Shelter in the time of a storm! Be where you can run in the ROCK and the SHELTER and HIDE, for The NAME of GOD is a Strong Tower! ("So true!" came the sanction from the joyous Assembly.)
To be conscious of GOD'S Presence, that is the mystery of the solving of your problems! If you are conscious of GOD'S PRESENCE such a Consciousness will do you just as it did Simon at the day of Transfiguration and as it did MOTHER! Aren't you glad! ("Yes, so glad!" came the reply.) It gave Her an Inheritance not made with hands, though apparently One was a Symbol here as a sketch and a reflection of the Reality of GOD'S Presence! But it will give you the Keys to the Kingdom!
(Surveying the dining hall and the surroundings, FATHER says:)
This is legally and materially the Palace Mission, Incorporated, as an abstract expression of the materialization of that which all of the religions have been stressing. They have been talking about what we are presently enjoying. Aren't you glad! ("So glad!" came the reply.) I have heard them say down in Christendom,
'I'm going to sit at the Welcome Table some of these days!'
For lo, these many years those who are dwelling and have been dwelling with ME, they see and they know, they are and have been sitting at the welcome Table- a Table that no man can make them ashamed! You would not be ashamed of any of these Tables under the Jurisdiction of your SAVIOR! ("No, MY LORD!" came the reply.)
'For GOD so loved the world that HE gave HIS Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish!'
Some may say, "Well, that meant he shall not perish mentally and spiritually." To you physically and Personally it is applicable! IF YOU LOVE GOD AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS YOU SHALL NOT PERISH! - SHALL NOT PERISH PHYSICALLY AND PERSONALLY- for
'The Spirit of the Consciousness of the Presence of GOD is the Source of all Supply and It will, at It does and as It has been, satisfy every Good Desire!'

Then you can live in peaceful and quiet resting places and fear not, little flock, it is your FATHER'S Good Pleasure to give you the Kingdom! it is Wonderful? (Loud applause rings out.))
So take these thoughts to consideration and as you take the place cards along with you with portraits of MOTHER, MY Spotless Virgin Bride, and MYSELF, as you see, She sits by MY Side, the Name is sufficient! I heard you say by composition,
'Jesus, the Name that charms our fears
And bids our sorrows cease,
'Tis music in a sinner's ears,
It's Life and Health and Peace!'
The NAME will charm your fears! The NAME will bid your sorrows cease! The NAME that I have given Her, as unto Her, thence to you and all who can and will accept of It, It will give you your Rightful Inheritance eternally in the Kingdom! (Loud applause resounds.)

With the verified statement or statistics as given by the press, they did not or had not kept record of it before this one year and a half, for they started a record of it about a year and a half, and now they see what has been done inside of this time. And one million and a half smokers of Cigarettes quit smoking! They would not nave done it just because of what has been said about cancer of the throat or mouth. Thousands have been conscious of it before! They knew or had heard of things happening something like that, but even though they knew people were dying from cancer even by smoking one another's cigarettes and pipes, they would not stop!
